The Problem Of Juvenile Delinquency - 1792 Words

JUVENILE DELINQUENCY Various experts can give us many theories on the causes of juvenile delinquency, including one s economic background, substance abuse, delinquent peer groups, repeated exposure to violence, increased availability of firearms and media violence, however, I feel that the number one cause of juvenile delinquency is the breakdown of families, including lack of parental control over children. It is ironic in America, today, one must have a driver s license to operate a vehicle, a permit to own a gun and even a license to own a dog, but one does not have to have training or a license in order to become a parent. Without specialized educational programs in child development and parenting, many of our future parents will†¦show more content†¦Drugs and deadly weapons are used increasingly as ways to solve problems. Spoiled, but Not a Brat Free Essays

Diquan Lamar Hubbard Introduction to College Writing Professor Sophie Bradford October 19, 2012 Spoiled, but not a Brat The ideal spoiled child does not come to mind easily. I observed people around campus, but I think one of the perfect examples of a spoiled child is Angelica Pickles from the popular Nickelodeon show Rugrats. Angelica showed characteristics that made her stand out as an antagonist. We will write a custom essay sample on Spoiled, but Not a Brat or any similar topic only for you Order Now She would refer to the other characters as â€Å"dumb babies. † Angelica would show how selfish she was by convincing the other characters to do plans that would only benefit her, which set her up most of the time as the antagonist in each episode. She would receive gifts to her heart’s desire and not be the least bit thankful. Her parents set out to please her in every way that they could, but it never seemed like it was enough. What makes a child in the real world like this? How have these bratty tendencies in childhood showed up later in life? A better way to explain this is to look deeper into what characteristics a brat actually has. Some people would look at a person as a brat because they get expensive things from their parents. Getting nice things may not have been seen as out of the ordinary to some spoiled children. Davis shares how she saw life at a younger age: Growing up, I was oblivious to money and the division of classes like many young kids. I never knew not every kid was presented with new clothes every day, or got to go to Toys-R-Us whenever they wanted or had to take educate classes once a week. I thought that was a normal everyday thing in the life of a kid. That was what kids my age did. (Davis 1) I think that receiving things and having a well off lifestyle does not mean that a person is spoiled. I think it is there sense of entitlement afterwards. Davis admitted that she was oblivious to other people and she thought that everyone lived the same way that she did. If a person feels like the reason that they receive these things is because they deserve them; that shows that is a characteristic of a brat. A brat thinks that they are the greatest gift to earth and nothing else matters as much as they do. Davis may have gotten things, but that doesn’t necessarily make her into a brat. Brattiness can continue on longer than in childhood if it is not stopped earlier. There are some people who continue to be brats, even into their college years. Students in college may be seen as spoiled or brats if they don’t have to work or they go home every weekend to have things like groceries bought or laundry done for them. I think this is overgeneralizing some of the habits that these students may do. I can see how this can look like they are just being lazy from the outside, but it could be that it is a way to save money by washing clothes together. This is especially true for people who live near campus. I was an example of people that did that. Since I had to go home every weekend at my college summer classes, I did not do laundry at school. Instead I would take it home and get it washed with everyone else’s, in an effort to save money. Any way that I could think of to save money was a plus, not just for me, but for my grandmother as well. My grandmother, who I lived with thought it was a good idea. It was cheaper for her to wash all of the clothes together, instead of having to half loads of clothing. I think that the whole idea of spoiled children being brats can sometimes lead to a lot of overgeneralization. This especially applies to people who may have more money than others. We assume that if someone has expensive things that they will be brats. I have seen a lot of rich people that can be very humble and a lot of people who don’t have as much money be as bratty as can be. A good example is a close friend of mine, Whittney Williamson. Whittney is rich. I think rich is even an understatement. She doesn’t even know how much money she has. Her father owns oil fields in Oklahoma and Texas. He also sells machinery. Whittney seems like she would get everything in the world, but that isn’t the case. I think Whittney was humble and very misunderstood. Because, she came to school in Camaros and Corvettes, other students assumed that she was going to be brat. I worked with her in Student Council, a club that makes decisions for the school and does community service, for three years. I have seen, just by working with her how hard she works. She is constantly being taught things from her father that will make her into a well off college student. She explained that she had to do the same things as most other normal kids and that she got this philosophy from her father who did not start out as an oil tycoon, but worked his way up. I have also seen a counter example in a people that may not be rich, but they were brats. I was in program called Upward Bound, while I was in high school. Upward Bound was created for at-risk teens that may not have come from the wealthiest of homes and they are usually first-generation college students. While I was in Upward Bound it was common to see people with nice things, but they had worked for them. They wore expensive clothes; they had all kinds of expensive technology like MacBook’s and iPads. A lot of them worked too and they would off-set the cost of a lot of their things. There were some that didn’t; that acted like they deserved to have things given to them just for being present. In Upward Bound they would help us by giving us checks for our mileage and gifts all of the time. There were some people who were just ungrateful for what they were given. To be ungrateful for something a person is given is a bad quality of a person in general. It is just another one of those factors that make someone into a brat instead of a spoiled child. A spoiled child can be guided toward becoming a brat depending on external influences. Family and peers can either facilitate a person’s brattiness or discourage it. Maria Yagoda, editorial assistant at saveur. om, explained how she was stopped from being a brat: Part of my avoidance of â€Å"brat† status, I believe, comes from having attended public schools, where I learned alongside a socially and economically diverse group of students. My parents also preached to me the importance of social activism and political involvement: dragging me to rallies, encouraging me to volunteer and constantly reminding me how fortu nate I was to grow up where I did. (Yagoda) If a person has experiences the outside world and learns about people and situations that are out of their comfort zone, they are less likely to be a brat. Like Yagoda mentioned, being in public school made her have to learn about different people. In most public schools there are a variety of people. Yagoda also said that her parents encouraged her to get involved. A parent has a lot of influence on how their child acts. If they allow different behaviors to occur, they are more likely to increase. Davis admits that her father grew up in a â€Å"struggling household† and that is what made him look outside of her privileged world. As people begin to become more independent they tend to act less like a brat. Something that helps is when parents teach their teenagers, especially right before college, more domestic skills. Yagoda mentioned that she had the pink laundry load. When teens a taught things like how to do laundry and how to do things like sweeping, or taking care of their own money while at home, they benefit later in life. They have things that they don’t have to. They won’t have to call mom or dad to help because a load of laundry turned pink or they didn’t realize that they used up all of their money in their checking account. Being spoiled is not a bad thing. A spoiled child, or even young adult, may get what they want, but that doesn’t make them into a brat. The behaviors that they show afterwards are what make them into a brat. A person can be spoiled all of their life, but if they learn to receive things and be thankful; they will be seen in a completely different light. If a person learns to not rely solely on receiving things but, striving out to get things done themselves and setting their own goals, they can be seen as not brats, or even spoiled children. They will be seen as good person in general. There are plenty of external factors that can make someone into a brat, but the ultimate thing that stops a spoiled child from turning into a brat is themselves. There is only so much that parents and peers can do that can affect a person’s personality. The deciding factor is how a person chooses to behave and how a person chooses to be in life. If she wounds you. love her. If she tears your bosom to pieces. love her! † ( Dickens. 230 ) and that is precisely what Pip does. He loves her though everything. Even though Estella is cold hearted and non capable of love he still is at that place for her and attentions for her. Though Estella is non ever the best friend to Pip. and seldom is even a good friend. he still cares for her and does non desire to see her injury. When Estella tells Pip she is to be married to Drummel by her ain act. he angrily states â€Å"Your ain act. Estella. to fling yourself off upon a brute† . . â€Å"such a average beast. such a stupid brute† ( Dickens. 351 ) . Pip worries about Estella and he knows that Bentley Drummel does non hold the best repute and is a unpleasant. choleric immature adult male. Pip is a true friend to Estella in the mode that he showed unconditioned love for her no affair what she did. When we are foremost introduced to Magwitch. we know him as Pips inmate. At the really beginning of the novel Pip shows kindness to his inmate and did whatever he could to assist him. Pip even stole nutrient from Joe and Mrs. Joe to assist feed the inmate and salvage him from hungering. That one small thing action he took in assisting the inmate alterations Pips full life in the fact that the inmate. better known as Magwitch subsequently on in the novel. is Pips secret helper. God bless you! You’ve neer deserted me. beloved boy† ( Dickens. 442 ) . Magwitch was merely so grateful to Pip for ever being at that place since he â€Å"was under a dark cloud. than when the Sun shone. † ( Dickens. 442 ) Pip and Magwitch are a perfect illustration of uncondition ed love and friendly relationship. Magwitch had neer experienced as much kindness as Pip had shown him was so impressed that he out of the blue and in secret gave Pip his luck. Great Expectations by Charles Dickens has many good subjects and lessons in it. one of which Tells of people demoing unconditioned love and friendly relationship towards each other. Even when the fortunes are non the best. a true friend will ever be by your side and attention for you. Pips relationships with Joe. Estella. and Magwitch are perfect illustrations of the subject that your true friends will love and care for you no affair what happens or how much wrong you do to them. Even though all these relationships had defects in the novel. the characters still end the novel being friends. lovingness and looking out for one another. It took Pip a piece to to the full grok who was his true friend and to whom he was non being a true friend to. Hitler wanted to get the German population to grow to one of the biggest so that he could take the space that Russia owned and so that he could destroy Versailles. Hitlers youth was a strict organisation that controlled the discipline of children and that helped Germany to grow its population. It also taught boys that the most important thing was is loyalty and obedience and that Hitler was the greatest person in this world and that he should be worshiped as God him self. This was another reason to persuade the youth into obeying anything Hitler said and that he was more important then the parents. To accomplish all of that, kids faced a grand deal of propaganda to make them into loyal citizens. Citizens also had compulsory activities to attend to like singing songs, camping were created to straighten Nationalism and to warship Hitler and the Nazis.

Crisis Intervention with a Biblical Worldview Research Paper

Crisis Intervention with a Biblical Worldview - Research Paper Example There are different styles used under crisis intervention and among of them are screening/assessment from medical model and problem solving from alternate services. Crisis intervention is found to be a suitable management strategy for people with suicidal tendency (Berrino et al., 2011). It is also a proven effective strategy that can be applied in the midst and after of natural disasters (Bronisch et al., 2006). Crisis intervention is therefore a remarkable strategy that aims to restore the ability of an individual to adapt to its immediate environment and its adverse impacts. Crisis intervention therefore should require more encouraging words in the hope that it will help the individual understands the true meaning and value of life. People experience crisis in life when they are faced with obstacles to their important goals or are both faced with dangers and opportunities (James, 2008). Handling situation like this primarily requires important choices and encouraging words to rema rkably create better perspectives out of the problem. Jesus reminded us the importance of encouraging words and the value of our choices in life. He believed that people are more valuable than any other things on earth and nobody should worry on what to come in their lives because God certainly is able to provide everything for them (Luke 12:24). Thus, he simply tried to point out the fact that we are certainly not totally in control of ourselves but there is God who simply takes control over everything else. However, he also emphasized that each one has the choice to worry or not. Thus, effective counseling in crisis intervention is therefore a matter of effective participation of the concerned person. When an individual is not able to take control of his own self and his balance over everything is disrupted, crisis is doomed to come in his life (Dattilio and Freeman, 2007). This emphasizes the fact that the most important move to sustain him from his balance is an effective

Reading Journal Week 7 â€Å"Soldier’s Home† The whole emphasis of this story lies in the life of a young solider who had served his purpose to his country and returned home only to find the closest place to his hart change dramatically before his eyes. The war has changed him and because of that change he has never completely recovered and event felt left out by everyone in the city except for his sister and his mom. His father was the man he feared and didn’t like as the story revels and when we find out that his father let him use the car for the â€Å"first time† we can see that as the attempt by the father to strengthen the bond †¦but it is too late, because now the solider feels like all this is just a pathetic attempt by his mother to make his father do something for him he’s own son. Week 9 â€Å"I Wondered Lonely as a Cloud† This paper explores the purpose and usage of flowers in poetry using William Wordsworth's "I Wandered Lonely as a Cloud" as an example. It focuses on Wordsworth's choice of words and also on the greater profound concept that he is trying to depict. The first part of the paper focuses on interpreting the poem. It shows how Wordsworth eloquently uses figurative language, imagery, and personification to describe a scenic display of daffodils. The second part of the paper offers an analysis of the poem. In particular, it examines the concept of the futility of the individual when compared to the collective good of society, as shown in the context of man versus nature. â€Å"Pied Beauty† Gerard’s belief in an omnipotent Creator enabled him to see an especial beauty in the world of Nature - the unpredictable, untamed patterns of the wilderness combining to form a whole far greater than the sum of its parts, glorious and 'true'. But what sets his verse apart from the hordes (I use the word advisedly) of Victorian nature poets was his ability to merge form and content to such a degree of utter perfection - his poetry _sounds_ right; his word-paintings leap off the printed page without traversing the intervening bridge of ordinary 'meaning'. Consider the structure of today's poem - there's a riot of assonance and alliteration, but it's combined with a an unusually high consonant-density; there's a strong underlying rhythm in the pattern of the stresses, but it's never plodding or weighty (indeed, the variations in the unstressed syllables ensure that the verse is kept flexible and 'clean'); the rhymes, though strictly enforced, are kept from becoming monotonous by an unusual rhyme scheme.

What is an Interest Group?

An interest group (also referred to as advocacy groups) is an organization organized by a special set of people with specific skills to lobby for or against a specific interest to benefit their cause. They usually lobby for one or more shared concerns to manipulate public policy and opinion especially in the U. S. Congress to benefit their cause, supporters, or one segment of society. They include a vast array of organizations such as: charitable organizations, civil right groups, corporations, professional and trade organizations, etc. Their main goal is to publicly or discreetly promoting and creating an advantage for its cause. Different types of Interest Groups There are a variety of interest groups such as business/trade organization, agricultural groups, professional groups, labor groups, promote causes groups, promote the welfare groups, religious groups and last but definitely not leads public interest groups. A business/trade organization is created by merchants, business personal’s or owner’s and commercial organizations to represent both small and large business groups. An ideal example of these groups are the U. S. Chamber of Commerce, American Bankers Association, National Association of Manufacturers or N. A. M. (www. srvhs. org. Aug 26th, 2012). The sole objective of an agricultural group is to sort and look after the interest of farmers and farming policy. They represent a variety of farmers in the agricultural sector in the work force who specialize in diary, grain, fruit, livestock etc. Anything pertaining to farming and their specialized products. Arguable the most known agricu ltural groups are the National Farmers Union, The National Grange, and the National Farmers Bureau. Professional groups are classified as occupations that require extensive training through a certificate or higher education such as education, medicine and law. They are created to promote and protect their member’s occupational interests and safety. Examples include The American Medical Association or AMA, The American Bar Associate (ABA) , and The National Education Association (NEA). One of the well known interest groups is labor unions. It is an organization of workers who share the same type of jobs or work in the same industry. (www. srvhs. org. Aug 26th, 2012). They press the government to formulate policies that will be beneficial to their members. The largest and most well known labor union is the AFL-CIO (The American Federation of Labor Congress of Industrial Organizations). Organized labor unions usually advocate with one voice on issues ranging from welfare to Social Security, employment and wages, etc. Promote causes groups are a large number of groups that either promote or advocate against a specific their members demand to be voiced upon. Theories of Myth Paper The WritePass Journal

Theories of Myth Paper Introduction Theories of Myth Paper IntroductionReferencesRelated Introduction Mythology, what is it? The dictionary defines mythology, as a set of stories, traditions, and beliefs associated with a particular group or the history of an event, arising naturally or deliberately fostered or a body of myths as that of a particular people or that relating to a particular person.   The word â€Å"Myth† itself is of the Greek origin from the Greek word mythos, â€Å"speech, word, fact, story, narrative†.   Although these words are rather restrictive in definition, the word myth can be said to fail to take into account the large body of twentieth century work on myth from many angles.   Myth, is also described or defined to be the compilation of some type of field work; and the aim may be to produce something of value for religious studies.   A myth theory can also be defined as raw material for transformation into artistic productions.   In some way shape or form, every culture or ethnic group is an original author of theoretical myths.   Fo r example, there has been scientific evidence that at one point there were parts of the earth that were covered in water and are now dry.   Other myths tell of an island, floating in the sky where sky people lived long before the world was created. A theoretical approach call the New Criticism/Formalism is said to be used when there is out of date text with no author or historical background.   It is misleading to read Greek or Latin text that is translated into another language word for word.   There is no way to trace the changes in myth over time because the text will not be chronological.   Late authors especially the Romans liked Traditional Biographical Criticism when they created life-records.   Traditional Biographical Criticism also works well for writings of political people who interpreted political stories in myth over time.   Many of these myths go unnamed and it becomes hard to analyze the author’s life in such cases. Folklore Studies and Anthropology explores unidentified works since in Folklore there are no individual creators of tales necessary.   Folklore studies and Anthropology work well when it comes to comparative literature approaches.   It is not limited to one version or text of a myth.   It works well when it comes to Greek and Roman magic or superstitions.   These studies are not good when it comes to complex symbolism.   However, it does show similarities between myths and legends. Earth Diver-Myths speaks of scientific evidence where the Earth has parts that are now dry and once were covered with water.   The myth says that a person dove into the water to retrieve some Earth.   The Earth that was brought to the surface is the same land we live on today.   There are other myths that say it was mud that was brought to the surface in a different way until it became the Earth.   The creation myth of Christians and Jews tells of the Earth once being covered completely by water.   The Japanese creation myth tells of muddy oceans covering the world at the beginning of time.   A GOD named Izanagi and GODDESS named Izanami were curious about what was under the Ocean.   Izanagi threw his staff into the ocean and pulled out some Earth which became the island of Japan.   Iroquois creation myth states that the island floating in the sky before the world was created had sky people who never died nor was born.   They never experienced sadness except for one day when a sky woman who discovered that she was going to give birth to twins.   She told her husband and this news made him very upset because they had never experienced this before and it did not seem possible.   He was so angry that he went to the center of the island where there was a big tree that gave off light over the entire island.   The husband was so angry and in disbelief that he tore down this tree tearing a big hole in the center of the island.   He then pushed his wife through the hole and she fell towards the water below.   There were water animals that existed on the Earth and saw the lady falling towards the water.   The water animals saved the lady and began to help her by diving to the bottom of water to get mud to build land.   The animals then took the mud and spread it on the back of a big turtle.   They continued and continued as it grew and grew becoming the size of North America. The idea of a personal approach to mythology happened in 1926 says Stanley Krippner.  Ã‚   However, you can make a strong case that the first proposed mythological foundation for an individual human experience was published a decade earlier.   C.G. Jung published, Symbols of Transformation, in 1912.   This was his vision of a mythological basis to the operation of human psyche.   Jung wrote in his memoir, Memories, Dreams, and Reflections which was his theme of the mythic nature of personal experience near the end of his life in 1961.   He was telling his own personal myth, telling one’s story in mythic terms.   Jung declared, whether the story is true or not is not the problem.   The only question is whether what I tell is truth or fable. The Influence of Deweys Philosophies in Modern Americas Education Research Paper

The Influence of Deweys Philosophies in Modern Americas Education - Research Paper Example This report declares that Dewey supported an interdisciplinary syllabus. This syllabus centered on linking many subjects and enabled students to enter and exit classrooms independently as they search for and pursue their interests and build their particular paths for gaining and applying knowledge. The teacher’s role in such a syllabus would be to act as an enabler more than an instructor. Dewey argued that the teacher’s role was to detect the interests of students, watch the directions they pursue naturally, and afterwards, act as an individual who assists in building problem-solving skills. This paper makes a conclusion that a teacher ought to convey context material information while students learn in groups. Conventionally, the classroom has been arranged with the teacher in front and students seated in rows. This model of classroom arrangements is practical in today’s education system and has been commonplace for decades. A teacher normally conveys information to a class, who then acquire and repeat it in a type of a written exam. In contrast, Dewey’s philosophy involves students learning in groups that were exploring various concepts under the teaching material. In Dewey’s education system, one would observe multiple dialogs a lot of cooperation. Although one might also observe a written exam, there may also be student assignments, slideshows, or other distinguished methods of assessment.

Philosophy of God, Religion, and Spirituality Article

Philosophy of God, Religion, and Spirituality - Article Example The concepts are connected to God. Despite the differences in these understandings, both depict the concept of an individual may be religious but not spiritual (Berryman 67). Additionally, they both bring the understanding that a person can be both religious and spiritual in the context that religion connects to spirituality through an abstract feeling or a supernatural object that creates belief. Therefore, it is agreeable that religion defines guidelines and beliefs that its followers adhere to while spirituality defines an individual’s own reality, with direction to an object. Philosopher A is reluctant to quote that children are born with spirituality; thus, little should be done to influence their spirituality since they will bond to what society provides. On the other hand, B and I concede the necessity of upbringing children in an atmosphere where they get to understand the reasons why certain things happen in certain ways. Philosopher A espouses his position by identifying innate ability that children are born with that makes the newborn capable of identifying objects and activities or practices around them (the children or newborn). B identifies children as societal responsibility that will transform to become what they have been molded to be. From the above premises, it is certain that children are entire subjects of societal beliefs and dispositions. They often grow and become adults defined by the values the society has imparted on them. Certainly, Spirituality connects us to God through religion. Religion sets the guidelines and principles that direct an individual’s spiritual world (Berryman).
